Las Posadas

En el nombre del Cielo

os pido posada,

pues no puede andar

mi esposa amada.

In the name of Heaven

I ask you for lodging,

because She cannot walk,

my beloved wife.

The procession moves through the neighborhood streets. The group grows bigger and bigger as it passes through the neighborhood. The procession is made up of children carrying candles dressed in brightly colored robes and ribbons as they reenact the journey made by Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem searching for shelter (Posada) at an inn. Led by an angel the Santos Peregrinos (holy pilgrims), sing these verses asking for Posada (shelter). House after house the response is the same.

Aquí no es mesón;

sigan adelante.

Yo no puedo abrir,

no sea algún tunante

This is no inn,

keep on going.

I won't open the door,

in case you are a truant.

Until they reach the final house on their journey when Joseph once again requests a room for the night but this time the doors open and the weary pilgrims are invited in.

Entren, Santos Peregrinos,

reciban este rincón;

no de esta pobre morada,

si no de mi corazón.

Enter, Holy Pilgrims,

accept this dwelling;

not of this humble house,

but of my heart.

Inside the fiesta begins. The sounds of music and villancicos (carols) fill the room. The children feast on candies and fruit and take turns striking colorful piñatas. There is plenty of food eaten and Ponche to be drunk.

The processions known as Las Posadas commence the evening of December 16 and celebrated for nine evenings until La Noche Buena (Christmas Eve). The tradition began in the 1500's when the Spaniards seeking to spread Christianity created the custom to teach the story of Jesus to the Aztecs.

The nine evenings of Las Posadas coincide with the nine-day Aztec celebration of the virgin birth of their most important god, Huitzilopochtli, the Sun God. The Priests drew on the Aztecs love of colorful fiestas and incorporated these traditions in to the Christian celebration of Christmas. Receiving permission from the Church in Rome , the Missionaries held nine simultaneous evening masses during the Aztec celebration. The priests added fireworks, pastorelas (live reenactments of the nativity), piñatas, food and as much merriment as possible a tradition that continues to this day.

Today in Mexico Christmas is an integration of regional customs and Christian doctrines. It is a community celebration complete with all the fixings for a grand fiesta, joyous music and good food.

Both locations will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Both locations will also be closed New Years Eve. And once you wake up from your big New Years Eve party, we will be open for lunch and dinner New Years Day.
